January 2010
Happy New Year to all.  Just wait for the year we got planned for you!  Is your New Year's resolution to bike more?

I came out for exercise, gentle exercise, and to notice the scenery and to botanise.  And no sooner do I get on that accursed machine than off I go hammer and tongs; I never look to right or left, never notice a flower, never see a view - get hot, juicy, red - like a grilled chop.  Get me on that machine and I have to go.  I go scorching along the road, and cursing aloud at myself for doing it.  ~H.G. Wells, The Wheels of Chance

Next Meeting

Please come to our January monthly meeting because we've got a full platter of things to discuss. Chief among these is a COTA Calendar for the year. We already have a number of events, training sessions, meetings and work parties scheduled, with many more soon to be added as well. This is a great chance for you to decide your level of involvement for the year ahead, and also to sign up in advance for the many opportunities for trail work training. Another discussion we will be having this Thursday is aimed at finding a way to coordinate with the local Search and Rescue so there is improved access and response time in the case of trail emergencies. Any expertise you have to offer will be valuable. Will be held on Thursday January, 28 at 7:00pm at the Central Oregon Environmental Center. See you there!

RTP Grant GO Ahead

The Central Oregon Trail Alliance (COTA) is pleased to announce that we have received the go-ahead for a large grant from the Federal Highways Administration for the Recreational Trails Program, administered by Oregon State Parks. This Grant provides partial funding for the Wanoga Mountain Bike Event area, a project which will create 35 miles of new multiple-use trail that COTA and the USFS have spent the last seven years developing.

The Grant will reimburse COTA for up to $56,000, covering two thirds of the total project budget of $84,000. The remainder in matching funds must be raised by COTA through corporate sponsorships, individual donors and memberships. The funds are going to be used to purchase equipment, tools, trail head kiosks, materials and signs to develop a state-of-the-art trail system. The Wanoga Trails will provide links to Edison Snow Park, Swampy Lakes and other Century Drive Trail heads, as well as the Deschutes River. These trails will improve the connections to recreational access for the communities of Deschutes River Woods, Sunriver and Bend.  To read more about this exciting news CLICK HERE
